Here in America we live in the most affluent period in all of history, yet much of the world still remains in abject poverty (meaning they don’t have clean water, food or medicine).

So what might we do as Christ followers?

As a family, imagine and talk about what $20 could do:

  • What presents could you buy yourself?
  • What presents could you buy someone else?
  • What would $20 do for someone poor in our town?
  • What would $20 do for someone without clean water, food, shelter or medicine?

Here’s a few stats about something as basic as water – adventconspiracy.org

  • 1.8 million people die every year from water borne illnesses (3900 children per day)
  • $10 gives a child clean water for and entire year
  • 20 to 30 billion dollars a year would provide everyone in the world clean water
  • Americans spend about $500 billion during holidays
  • Consumer credit debt is 2.4 trillion ( $8100 per person)

As a simple step, don’t take on more debt, or consider spending less this Advent season. You might even find that you want to reallocate some money towards giving to the poor.
