40days

In the Church, Lent begins today.  40 days of intentional spiritual discipline, a journey toward the celebration of Easter with daily offerings of prayer, study of scripture, fasting and almsgiving. Perhaps you already know how you plan to spend this season of preparation, or perhaps you are looking for help in what to “do” or better, offer, for Lent.  This daily Lenten blog will invite you to new and different ways of exploring Lent on your own and in community through reflection, invitation, online resources and opportunities to connect with others who are on this journey.  Follow us, and/or return each day during the season of Lent.

This season begins today, this season begins with the Imposition of Ashes.

“Get Your Ash On” Wednesday

Services will be offered at Episcopal Churches around the Village morning, noon and evening. 

Church of the Ascension: 8 am, 12 and 7 pm

Grace Church: 8 am, 12:10 pm, 6 pm

St. Luke in the Fields: 7:30 am, 1 pm, 6:30 pm

St. Mark’s in the Bowery: 7 am, 12 pm, 7 pm

St. John in the Village: 12 pm, 7 pm

Mary Cat Young will participate in the noon service at St. Mark’s in the Bowery followed by Ashes-to-go at Cooper Union Square/Astor Place Subway station entrances.

Ashes To Go?

For those less familiar and wondering about the dark smudges on foreheads, it is an opportunity to ask a chaplain about this practice. Let this invitation to the season of Lent, to growing in knowledge of the Church, to being a seeker and a follower of Christ. Let it be your entry point into understanding ancient tradition in contemporary ways.

Ashes-to-go will be available at the Chaplain’s office of the Center for Spiritual Life 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. (238 Thompson Street, 4th Floor) and will be administered as part of the Night Prayer service at 9 p.m. in the Catholic Center Chapel (1st Floor).
